Welcome to the Pacific Wifi Network.
Frequently asked questions: FAQ’s
Congratulations
If you are seeing this page you have a strong enough signal to connect. Below
are some of the common problems usually associated with wifi.
- I am receiving a signal but can’t get a connection.
Signal strength is king, the stronger the signal you have the less likely you are to get
“bounced” by a stronger signal from another user. Pacific Wifi recomends the use of a
“boosted” external antenna. We recomend the “Alfa” brand which can be bought
through the payment site.
Some external antenna’s are not compatible with the system, find a location where
there is sufficient signal strength to use a laptop with an integrated aerial. In Opua the
Opua Yacht Club is a good area. If you are still having trouble, refresh your network
connections list and choose to connect to a different access point. You will need at least
four bars signal strength to get a connection. Still having trouble? Down Under Computers
in Whangarei can offer technical advise.
- When I put in my Login and password the system says I am already logged on.
If you have lost signal for a period the system
will hold onto your login for a period of
approx 20 minutes before it allows your
login to expire.
You must also make sure you use the log
out pop up to log out of the system each
time you terminate a session. Most computers
are set to block popups so hit the monitor
session button after you logon. If all else
fails try turning your computer off and restarting
it.
- When I enter my login and password it returns me straight to the login page. Unfortunatly this means you are using an incorrect login or password. These can be
reset but there is a charge for doing this. To reset your login and password call the
Help Desk on 021 184 7887. Please have your credit card, your email address and what
you think your login and password are at the ready to give to the operator.
- My connection keeps cutting off.
Again there are several reasons,
a/. If your connection has been idle for more than 20 minutes the system will disconnect
you automatically.
b/. If the signal strength is weak.
c/. If the access point is experiencing peak traffic.
Try connecting to a different access point, if one is available.
- My computer has connected to an access point but my browser is unable to
connect to the server.
The first page you should see is the Pacific Wifi login page. If you are getting a “Server
Unavailable” message try.
a/. Closing the browser (the program that allows your computer to access the net) and
restarting the program.
b/. Close the browser, connect to a different access point and try again
c/. Shut down and restart your computer. Some server availability problems are caused
by signal strength, the amount of traffic on the access point, the Telecom network may
be down or there may be some “Hogs” taking all the available bandwidth.
Downloading
movies or other large files and using programs such as Skype for VoIP calls are big
users of bandwidth. During peak times such users may have their connection “throttled
back” or disconnected altogether to allow other users to access the net.
- I am using an external antennae and can’t connect.
a/. If you are using an USB extension cable there may be too much power loss for the
antennae to work properly, take your laptop to a place where you can get reception with
the antennae connected direct to the usb port.
b/. Make sure your internal antennae is turned off.
If still having problems.
c/. Go to, Start> Connect to> choose your external antennae. If you have chosen to
have the network recognize your computer instead of entering a login and password for
each session you will only be able to connect using the setup that was configured when
you first logged in ie you can’t export your login to another computer.
If you are still experiencing problems please call 021 184 7887 to request technical
assistance. Technical issues other than those that are network related will incur a
service charge.
Thank you for choosing Pacific Wifi as your service provider.
